Plenty of other movies had featured ripped leads, villains, or characters. But in 3. 00, every single Spartan, dozens in all, perfectly blended the cuts of a comic book superhero with the classical lines of Jacques Louis Davids Leonidas at Thermopylae all while looking dirtier, tougher, and more defined than either. These bodies, it turned out, were the result of a perfect storm of training and nutrition factors, all orchestrated by trainer Mark Twight and the staff from his Salt Lake City based gym, Gym Jones. A former world class alpinist, Twight applied all the intense physicality and strategic planning of his previous career to the challenge of making men look like mountains. Gerard Butler 300 WorkoutHe gave his subjects no quarter they trained together shirtless in a single hall in Montreal, ate customized meals, and were subjected to regular unflinching critiques. Star Gerard Butler later said it was the first time anyone had called him fat. The film and its grueling workout regimen became the stuff of legend. But rather than embracing the role of the next Hollywood trainer, Twight turned his focus back to Gym Jones for most of the next decade, before returning to the limelight as Henry Cavills trainer in 2. Man of Steel. After transforming Cavill into the most impressive Superman to take the screen, Twight reprised his training role for the long simmering sequel of 3. Rise of an Empire, which comes out today. Its remarkable how much we can accomplish by tinkering with the psychological aspect and really hammering people with the training. Since spoiler alert the Spartans all died in 3. Twight dealt with mostly new actors, a new location, and a host of challenges that the original film didnt face. But the results ended up looking pretty familiar. A few days before the films release, he spoke with Bodybuilding. How did 3. 00 and the precedent it set loom over what you were doingNo one, when the original came out, had any idea of the kind of impact it would have outside of the movie worldin particular in the fitness world. And I think that raised the bar really high for expectations for the second one. The Murder At The Vicarage Pdf there. But then, the storyline of the second one goes in a different direction, where the main characters are an alliance of free Greeks whose profession isnt war, but rather, theyre basically citizen soldiers. So on one hand, you wouldnt expect them to look like the Spartans, who grew up on training and fighting in the first one, and were united all the way to that big battle in their intent and spirit. This, however, is a shaky political alliance to fight off a common enemy. But then, from our perspective, its not like were going to say, Well, well give them a few percentage points of body fat because theyre not professional soldiers or anything like that. We were going to go as hard as we could and see how it all played out. We were going to go as hard as we could and see how it all played out. How had you grown and changed as a trainer since the original film Most of the training for the original happened in late 2. January of 2. 00. The second one was all shot between basically April and October of 2. So lets call it seven years, and yeah, I learned quite a bit. But mostly it comes down to being more adept at addressing a greater variety of problems. During the first filmand on this onewhen you have so many people, theres no way really to individualize the work. You could try and put certain groups together who have similar characteristics and abilities and push them within those smaller groups, but overall, I think with cast and stunt crew included, on the first one we were managing about 3. And so it comes down to the central piece of our training philosophy, which is Find the problem, fix the problem. And I think I didnt necessarily have as accurate an understanding of what that meant on the first one as I do now. The sequel also posed a number of different problems that 3. On the original, we had pretty much total control of all the people. We had them united in one single place of training, one location, and we had a kitchen in the training hall with three chefs on site. All the meals were prepared according to our menu and the timing that we designed. We could fine tune the diet for people more calories, less calories, more protein, less protein, higher fat content for one guy, but another guy needs more carbohydrates because his energy is always low. It comes down to the central piece of our training philosophy, which is Find the problem, fix the problem. Mark Twight, far left and right. But with 3. 00 The Rise of an Empire, the movie was shot and most of the preparation was done in Sofia, Bulgaria. I dont want to overstate it, but it wasnt the same as having all the resources we had in Montreal or Los Angeles on the first 3. And then we had a number of cast who were obligated to other jobs they had to do their training in other locations prior to coming to Sofia. So we had a lot of moving parts and not everybody in the same place at the same time, so we couldnt achieve that small unit integrity that we had on the first one, where everyone went through the same hardship all together. We obviously had some language issues as well, because there were a number of stunt guys from the United States, a couple from England, but we also had guys from Bulgaria, from the Ukraine, from Poland, from Germany, all of whom had English as a second languageif they had English at all. So the educational process that we could go through training on an individual basis, say, for Man of Steel, we couldnt do here in the same way. I recall trainers from other films, such as The Hobbit, telling me that they utilized heavy everyday stuff from the set for training. You, on the other hand, shipped a miniature version of Gym Jones all the way to Bulgaria. How was that receivedIt was interesting. One of the reasons we had it shipped was because we had no idea what would be available to us there. And there was no way I was going to try to show up and cobble something together, because I believe you need to walk into a gym and know immediately that its a place of workits separate, and its something different from outside. One of the things weve learned over the years is that the training environment is absolutely essential to the outcome. And I think when youre just finding stuff to do, theres no way you can shift someones psychology from the instant they walk in the door. And so we put everything together and weighed it, and then we realized we could actually find the rubber flooring we use in the Czech Republic, so we didnt ship that over. But it was still a little over 5,0. Bulgaria. So they would walk in the gym and say, Wow. Weve seen those before. And there were barbells and bumper plates and dumbbells and everything, so we really had a small version of the gym. Still, it took a number of weeks for guys to adapt to it, because the weight training thesis in Bulgaria is a little different than what we do. Obviously Olympic lifting is a big national sport, and the other big sports are wrestling, and maybe judo. So Olympic lifting and bodybuilding are really the main focus of the way those guys train, and when we started laying some stuff on them, they were having their lungs turned inside out and thinking, Wow, theres no way this could possibly work. The Hell On Earth Fitness Plan Outside Online. Watch avideo about the Tabata Workout Methodon Outside Television. Gym Jones Hell on Earth Fitness Plan. Gym Jones creator Mark Twight. I first heard about Gym. Jones the way you hear about a secret trout stream or an all night ravethrough word of mouth and friends of friends. To me, gyms tend to come in two varieties, neither particularly appealing. Option A the Fitness Supercenters, with their overcrowded cardio dens and cucumber scented saunas. And Option B the Iron Grottoes, run by mulleted muscleheads in Metallica T shirts. Gym Jones, the rumor went, was something else entirely, a new type of facility devoted to a mutant strain of fitness that combined elements of powerlifting, gymnastics, endurance sports, and military style calisthenics. Insiders insisted that this odd hybrid was building bombproof athletes of all types and ages, and that the movement had acquired a devoted following in locales stretching from Washington, D. C., to Vancouver, B. C. Gym Jones is located in Salt Lake City, where it was created by Mark Twight, a world class alpinist who chiseled a career on walls of rock and ice so dangerous that, in some instances, he had only about a 5. Twight retired from climbing in 2. His expertise attracted an elite cross section of clientsmountaineers, military special ops, cage fightersbut the gym, the origins of which date back to 2. Twight had trained the British actors who portrayed Spartan soldiers in the war porn fantasy film 3. Over the course of a few months, hed turned the doughy thesbians into a hardened phalanx of freshly waxed Chippendales models, with marbled arms and abs like giant tortoiseshells. The superbods inspired a viral buzz that catapulted traffic on the Gym Jones Web site from a million hits a month to more than 1. Like its owner, the gym took on a mystical, slightly nightmarish quality part martial arts dojo, part smash lab, part medieval dungeon, all intended to facilitate the arduous process of mental and physical transformation. When I checked out the Web site, I was greeted by a skull and crossbones and a warning Gym Jones is not a cozy place. There are no televisions, no machines, no comfortable spot to sit. Effort and pain may not be avoided. Physical and psychological breakdowns occur. The routines were said to be so intense, so blindingly debilitating, that they brought even the hardest men to their knees, whimpering in slicks of their own sweat. The first time I went through one of those workouts, my legs swelled up like balloons. I couldnt walk for a week, says Rob Maximus Mac. Donald, a world champion mixed martial arts fighter who now helps Twight run the gym. OK, I thought, that which does not kill me and then I e mailed Twight, asking if I could come out to give it a try. His response was swift and dismissive. Who the hell was I Did I have any idea what I was getting myself intoMany of our guys worked out for a year before they started meaningful training, he wrote. Im not interested in having someone take a shallow look. A quick peek is a waste of time. I told him I was hoping for more than a quick peek. As a 4. 1 year old amateur athlete, I was acutely aware of the encroaching infirmities of middle age, but I hardly felt like my days on skis, a bike, or a soccer field were anywhere close to being over. I might be slipping, but I still felt strong and capable. With a little help, I figured, I could unleash whatever whup ass was left. Twight agreed to let me attend one of his two day introductory seminars, provided I came prepared. That meant I had to pretrain, so he put me in touch with one of his handpicked disciples, Carolyn Parker, a 3. Albuquerque, New Mexico, not far from my home. Once a week for the next two months, I drove to a grassy field where Parker, a stunning physical specimen with a fondness for climbing waterfall ice in designer leather pants, schooled me in the Gym Jones way. The first day, she threw a medicine ball so hard that it knocked the wind out of me. Other sessions involved dizzying combinations of dead lifts, squats, lunges, strange ballet like kettlebell routines, and various other exercises of sadistic invention. One day, we did something called 3. Parker giggled maniacally as she handed me two 2. She told me to raise them to my shoulders and push them above my head as many times as I could in 3. Then I had to hold the weights up, arms locked, for 3. Id finished four one minute sets without a rest. By the last set, I could manage only a few reps, my arms noodling while I emitted a snorting sound, like a warthog. At the end, I fell into the grass, soaking wet. Parker stood next to me with her hands on her hips. I think youre ready, she said. And so, like some sad pilgrim seeking redemption through his own suffering, I arrived at an unmarked warehouse in Salt Lake City on a blistering June day, armed with just enough knowledge to stir a deeply nauseating realization What I was about to experience was really, really going to hurt. GYM JONES WAS CONCEIVED in a windowless room in a decommissioned bread factory in downtown Salt Lake. The name was bestowed by Twights wife, Lisa, a martial arts student who sometimes carries knives hidden in her boots and who told me wryly that she has a knack for marketing. Mostly, Twight used the space to train friends and himself. He was still climbing hard enough that he wanted a dedicated space in which to keep in shape, and mainstream facilities didnt cut it. We wanted to do stuff they wouldnt put up with, he says. Throwing medicine balls, dropping weights on the ground, working genuinely hard, and creating something with our own spirit, especially the music. Ah, yes, the music. Few things had fueled Twights angst ridden ride as a climber more than punk rocks Sturm und Drang Sisters of Mercy, the Damned, Skinny Puppy, and a trove of others, spliced together on mix tapes that he blasted into his ears while hacking up some heinous frozen cliff. His 2. 00. 1 collection of climbing essays, Kiss or Kill Confessions of a Serial Climber, contains stories with titles cribbed from song lyrics, like Glitter and Despair and House of Pain. Twights worldview could be so nihilistic that one friend nicknamed him Dr. Doom. Twight made money in various ways from sponsorships, from training elite soldiers in alpine fitness and survival techniques, and from serving as a distributor for Grivel, an Italian climbing gear company. His interest in starting his own gym evolved in part from experiences hed had with a then fledgling program called Cross. Fit, developed by Greg Glassman, now 5. Santa Cruz, California, whom everyone simply called Coach. Cross. Fit emphasized old school exercises and movements like squatting, jumping, pulling, pushing, and so on. Glassman had a gym in Santa Cruz but mainly shopped his product through daily workouts posted on crossfit. Web site he launched in 2. He contended that Cross. Fit was all most athletes really needed, because it had the remarkable ability to develop strength and endurance simultaneously. It relied on weight loaded drills combined with natural movements performed with grueling intensity. The circuits were christened with colorful names, like Fight Gone Bad, or after Navy SEAL Cross. Fitters killed in action. Glassman even created a mascot, Pukie the Clown, a Bozo like character with a cascade of vomit flowing from his mouth. Twight first tried Cross. Fit in December 2.
